The right pass depends almost entirely on what you want to see and how many days you have.
First-time visitors who want a structured experience: the Turbopass Naples combines the main archaeological sites with a hop-on hop-off bus, a street food tour and a pizza cooking class. It is the only pass that treats Naples as a city experience rather than a museum programme — and the only one that includes the Royal Palace of Caserta alongside Pompeii and Herculaneum in a single ticket.
Visiting Naples city only — no Pompeii, no day trips: the Naples City Center Pass is the most focused option, with the Lapis Museum as its centrepiece — a Greco-Roman cistern network 35 metres underground, reached by panoramic lift. The Naples City Card covers a wider selection of city sights including the MANN and the Catacombs of San Gennaro, with Pompeii available as a 10%-discounted add-on if you decide to extend your visit.
Pompeii and Herculaneum without Vesuvius: the Campania Artecard 7 covers both sites plus MANN, Caserta, Castel Sant’Elmo and much more within 7 days. At €49 it is the most comprehensive option for visitors spending a week or more in the region, with over 80 sites across Campania included.

Public Transport in Naples and Campania
The historic centre of Naples is largely walkable, but Metro Line 1, the four funiculars and the Circumvesuviana train network make it easy to reach the Vomero hill, the port and the Vesuvian sites without a car.
Tickets and passes
The Unico Campania system covers the metro, funiculars, ANM buses and the Circumvesuviana under one fare structure. A single ride costs €1.60. Daily passes are available in two versions: Aziendale (€4.50) — valid for one transport company only (e.g. ANM metro and funiculars, or EAV Circumvesuviana, not both together); and Integrato (€5.40) — valid across all Unico Campania networks including both ANM and EAV, but only within the city limits of Naples. Journeys on the Circumvesuviana beyond the city boundary — to Ercolano Scavi or Pompeii Scavi — require a separate ticket regardless of which day pass you hold. Weekly passes: €13.50 (Aziendale) and €16.20 (Integrato) — worthwhile for stays of five or more days. Tickets and passes can be bought at metro station machines, tabacchi and at unicocampania.it.
Tap & Go — pay with your bank card
The simplest way to travel is to tap your contactless bank card, Apple Pay or Google Pay directly at the turnstile — no ticket needed, no queuing at machines. This works on:
- Metro Line 1 — all 20 stations
- All four funiculars (Centrale, Chiaia, Montesanto, Mergellina)
- Circumvesuviana (EAV) — all stations on all lines, including Ercolano Scavi and Pompeii Scavi — unicocampania.it/tap-and-go
- Alibus (airport bus to Piazza Garibaldi and the port) — tap in only, no tap out required

Tap in — Tap out: what you need to know
On the Circumvesuviana, always tap in at the departure station and tap out at the arrival station — using the same card both times. If you forget to tap out, the system charges the maximum fare for that zone. On Metro Line 1 and the funiculars, tap out is recommended but not always enforced within the Naples city zone. Note: the tap-out readers on Metro Line 1 are small dark boxes near the exits — not at the turnstiles — and easy to miss. The system automatically calculates the best rate: if you make enough journeys in one day, the charge is capped at the daily pass price. No need to decide in advance which pass to buy.
Campania Express
A faster, more comfortable tourist service runs seasonally on the Circumvesuviana route to Pompeii and Sorrento. Tickets (€6) must be bought at the station counter or online — Tap & Go does not apply to the Campania Express.
Accommodation in Naples and Campania
Naples is the best base for exploring the region. It has the widest range of accommodation — from budget hostels in the historic centre to boutique hotels in Chiaia — and the best transport connections to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Caserta and the Phlegraean Fields. From Naples Centrale, the Circumvesuviana reaches Ercolano Scavi in 15 minutes and Pompeii Scavi in 30 minutes.
Sorrento is a popular alternative — quieter, on the Circumvesuviana line — but pricier and less convenient for the city museums. Pompeii town offers direct access to the excavations but little else. For Caserta or Paestum, a day trip from Naples is recommended over staying locally.

More InformationDriving in Campania
Naples itself is best avoided by car — narrow streets, no clear right-of-way conventions and very limited parking make driving in the city centre more stressful than it is worth. Outside Naples, a car opens up destinations that are impractical by public transport: Paestum, the Phlegraean Fields, the Cilento coast and the more remote parts of Campania.
Go with the flow. Neapolitan driving operates on informal rules that take precedence over formal ones. Watch what other drivers do at junctions and roundabouts and match their pace. Hesitation causes more confusion than confident movement.
Keep 360° awareness. Pedestrians step into the road without looking, scooters appear from side streets at speed, and cyclists do not always use cycle lanes. Check mirrors constantly and leave more space than you normally would.
Attended car parks. In Naples it is standard practice at many attended garages to hand over your car key so the attendant can shuffle vehicles. This is normal — keep valuables with you.

Pompeii — Archaeological Park
The ancient Roman city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD is one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in the world. More than 60 hectares of streets, houses, temples, shops and public buildings are preserved almost as they were on the day of the eruption. The famous plaster casts of victims — people and animals caught in the ash — are among the most haunting sights in Italy.
How to get there:
By train (Circumvesuviana): from Napoli Garibaldi or Porta Nolana, 30 minutes to “Pompeii Scavi – Villa dei Misteri”. Tap & Go accepted. Trains run every 20–30 minutes.
By train (Trenitalia): regional train from Napoli Piazza Garibaldi to Pompei (approx. 39 minutes, from €4.80), then local bus NP11 to Pompeii Scavi (10 minutes) — bookable together.
By car: A3 motorway, exit Pompei Ovest. Large car parks at the main entrance.
Royal Palace of Caserta
The largest royal palace in the world by floor area, built for the Bourbon King Charles III in 1752. Over 1,200 rooms, lavishly decorated state apartments, a court theatre and a 3-kilometre formal garden culminating in a cascade of fountains. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.
How to get there:
By train: regional trains from Napoli Centrale to Caserta, 30–40 minutes. The palace is 500 metres from the station on foot.
By car: A1 or A3 motorway, exit Caserta Sud. The park is large — an electric bike or horse-drawn carriage is recommended for the 3-kilometre walk to the waterfall.
National Archaeological Museum (MANN)
One of the greatest archaeological museums in the world, housing the most important collection of finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum — including the Alexander Mosaic, the Farnese Bull and the Secret Cabinet of erotic antiquities. Essential context for anyone visiting the Vesuvian excavations.
How to get there:
By metro: Metro Line 1, stop “Museo”. 15-minute walk from Napoli Centrale. Tap & Go accepted.

Herculaneum — Excavations
Smaller and better preserved than Pompeii, Herculaneum was buried not by ash but by a pyroclastic flow that sealed the city in near-perfect condition — preserving wooden furniture, food and organic materials that Pompeii lost. The compact site makes it possible to explore thoroughly in two to three hours.

Castel Sant’Elmo
A star-shaped fortress built in the 14th century on the Vomero hill, offering one of the finest panoramic views in southern Italy — across the Gulf of Naples, Vesuvius and the islands of Capri and Ischia. Today it functions as an exhibition space and is easily combined with the adjacent Certosa di San Martino.

By train: regional trains from Napoli Centrale to Paestum, 60–75 minutes. The museum is 200 metres from the station. Not all trains stop at Paestum — check timetables in advance.

Royal Palace of Naples
The official residence of the Bourbon kings of Naples, built in the 17th century and facing the vast Piazza del Plebiscito. The state apartments, court theatre, royal library and chapel are open to visitors. One of the central landmarks of the city, a short walk from the waterfront.

Mount Vesuvius
